Managing to Live Within Our Means

Home

There are many things in life that are flexible.  What we have to spend each month is flexible only to the point that we can not spend more than we make or have available in our bank account.

What we can do, is to watch where and how we spend our money.  Be conservative as much as possible.  Name brand foods in the grocery store do not always mean better taste.  Cereal packed in boxes does not taste any better than cereal that is packaged in those bags you see, normally down on the bottom shelf.  What items do you purchase at the grocery store that you do not really need?  Snacks are nice, but, do we really need them?

Clothing is another item we can save $ on.  Do we really need to shop at the Boutique when Wal-Mart offers the same item, but at greatly reduced prices.

If we can arrange with our employer to let us work from home two or three days a week, then we save on the cost of gas.  The upkeep intervals for the cars oil changes are extended greatly at the same time.  If there are kids at home, then on those days you work from home you save the day care expense.  You also save the time of not having to get the kids there and then back home again.  More $ savings.

What about in the house?  Where is the thermostat set for the heat/air conditioning?  You can save a lot by turning the heat down and wearing a long sleeve shirt or sweater. Same for the air conditioning.  Set it for a higher temp before it turns itself on.  You will notice an immediate savings.  Close heat/air conditioning vents for rooms that are not used.

Something all of us right handed people have a tendency to do?  Every time we go to the kitchen sink to rinse a plate or cup is to turn on the hot water!  Why?  We normally will carry them in our right hand and the left hand is free.  Each time we do that, the hot water tank fires up to warm the water again.

What about all those lights that are on in the house?  Is there someone in the room?  What wattage light bulbs are you using?  Computers?  Screen savers do not save $.  Turn the monitor off when your not using the computer.

You get the idea.  There are many ways we can cut our expenses if we just think about what we are doing.  How much will you save this next year?
